Ultimate Sprintcar Championship
We raced at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway on Saturday the 4th December for Round 3 of the USC Championships.
The format was heat racing where I qualified 2nd fastest in my group.
As we started from our qualifying position the first heat saw me starting from 2nd place. We formed up ready to start the race and took off but the starter didn’t like the start. We had to reform and start again which was good for me as I got the jump on the second start and ran around the outside to grab the lead. I never looked back and with about 3 laps to go I caught up to some slower cars but had enough gap so I decided to settle in rather than risk the overtake.
Heat 2 I started from 8th position as I was the highest points’ scorer in my group and highest points start from the back. This was a really fun race for me, probably the best one I have had so far! I finished in 4th position but the enjoyment I had overtaking and fighting each car and driver for every spot was awesome fun.
The dash got cancelled due to a little shower of rain – had the dash gone ahead I would have made it as I was 5th overall on points.
I started the feature from 5th place and had a good start. I was on the inside but managed to get to the top in turn 1 and 2 – the car felt really great and I was able to run with the top 5 guys. We pulled away from the rest of the field after about 3 laps – the pace was quite fast and we were up on the fence. As the race went on my car lost grip and I wasn’t able to hang on to my 5th spot, dropping back to 11th as I crossed the line with zero tread on both my rear tyres from brand new. (I would say that may have something to do with it!!)
All in all I had another really great race meet – drove nice and fast and smooth and learnt a hell of a lot. Once again thanks to Michael our crew chief and my family for coming and helping me too. We don’t race at Toowoomba for a while now but I can’t wait to get back there already.
