The annual King’s Sprintcar Challenge was held at Borderline Speedway, Mount Gambier, South Australia on Thursday 20th January.

We headed to Mt Gambier early so that we had enough time to change our motor over after the last race at Avalon. We arrived with plenty of time and changed the motor over so all worked out great. This was my first time at Mt Gambier too – the format was different with no hot laps and instead we had 4 qualifying laps with only 2 cars on the track.

Heat 1 I started out of 2nd and went back a spot on the first lap but managed to get back into 2nd on the 2nd lap and stayed there. Heat 2 I started from 6th as they inverted the field and I finished 4th.

For the feature race I managed to qualify 4th overall, which was really awesome for me and for my first time racing here. We went 4 wide for the crowd and I was on the front row with some of the biggest names in the world of sprintcars.

It was a hard and fast race – most likely the fastest race I have been in so far speed wise. 10 laps into the race every single light went off in the complex plunging us into complete darkness. All 20 sprintcars managed to hit their brakes in the pitch black and slow down and come to a stop without anyone hitting anything. I have never been in anything like this before it was absolutely crazy!!!

We had to wait about 30 minutes for the lights and power to come back on and then we re-fired the cars and finished the 20 laps off. The first 10 laps I had been running well in 6th place but after the restart the track took on rubber in the middle, as I was still up high I didn’t notice it and got passed by cars that found it early on. I managed to find it and get back on the pace but I had dropped too many spots by then.

Over all I am super happy with my first race meet at Mt Gambier and learnt a lot of race craft from some of the best Sprintcar drivers in the country.
