This weekend saw us making the long drive to Warrnambool in Victoria – 24 hours driving each way!!!! This was Warrnambool’s first race meet for the year, due to wet weather for the previous 2 races.
We decided we would go down for Max’s Challenge, a pretty iconic race meet in Victoria in honour of Max Dumesny, an all-time great sprint car driver.
With a field of 52 cars there was 2 flights and we qualified 5th in the second flight. Starting the heat race from second position I managed to win my heat, which was really great putting me into the dash. Drawing pill 3 I started the dash from 3rd place. Unfortunately, I hit a tyre that was on the infield, breaking my front axle and arms forcing me to retire after 3 laps – an error on my behalf that’s all it was!!
I started the feature from 8th position and the track was really rough and heavy. I started off slowly, just knowing I had to be there at the end. Driving too slow though, I ended up in about 12th position at one stage of the race. Once I got settled, and really started to drive, I realised the harder I drove the car the better it felt.
A re-start with 2 laps to go saw me in 5th position. Making a good start I went to the bottom in turns 1 & 2 and the two cars in front of me slid wide on the exit. I hit the floor with the gas pedal and shot past them and managed to hold onto 3rd place.
I was so pumped with my drive and finishing in 3rd – I learnt a load of stuff too, which is always handy.
A massive thank you to Michael Gee, Todd Doyle & Dad for taking the trip with me down to Warrnambool and back. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Thank you also to Premier Speedway Warrnambool – my second time there and it is an amazing track and facility. I really enjoyed racing there and we will be back down for the Classic in late January.
