Ultimate Sprintcar Championship

USC Round 2 – Saturday 20^th November.

We raced at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway on the weekend for Round 2 of the USC Championships.

It is a different format of racing where you qualify in groups and then race 2 heats against your group for points. Points are then added up and the field is sorted into highest points overall to lowest.

I started off by qualifying 4th in our group (which would have been 5th overall) which I was happy about. Started heat 1 out of 4th position and moved forward 1 spot coming home in 3rd banking great points.

Heat 2 I started from 4th again and was in 3rd when the front right lower radius rod came off as I was turning into turn 3 on the loud pedal. This turned the car right straight away and I only just managed to save it from ploughing into the fence. I then regathered it and crawled around the bottom to go infield. (Even crawling around the bottom I nearly hit the fence as I had no steering.)

A DNF for heat 2 hurt me badly on points, so when all the points got combined after the heats I was in 19^th which meant I started from 4^th in B main and the top 4 only go through. I had a bad start in the B but just put my head down and drove clean laps.

The car in front made an error in the middle of turn 1 and 2, enabling me to get into 3^rd then over take 2^nd place shortly after that. With about 5-6 laps to go, 1^st place got held up a little by a back marker. I drove around the top of him on the exit of turn 4 and took the lead, holding onto it to finish 1^st in the B gaining a transfer spot into the feature.

Started the feature from 18^th but unfortunately I had to pull in on the first lap as something was wrong with my engine – it was making a missing or rattling noise. I wasn’t sure what it was so I pulled off the track and into the infield and had to watch the race from there.

Not the way I wanted to finish the night but that happens sometimes in racing. I was really happy though with my drive in the B. We will get the engine checked, try and find the problem and come back out next weekend at Archerfield.
